PURGATORIE MEDITERRANEAN THEATER FESTIVAL
A story that concerns us – IDEM, NEC UNUM
The Mediterranean is not a geography. Its boundaries have never been drawn by anyone, neither in space nor in time. They are neither economic, nor historical, nor state nor national. That is why the Mediterranean is not history but duration. The Mediterranean is a mosaic of past and present, Greek philosophy and culture, Roman law and the republic, ancient Arab wisdom and Provence, Venice and the South Slavs on the Adriatic, and Dubrovnik and Boka.
But the Mediterranean did not create its Mediterranean identity only on its shores, but much wider and longer to the north, east and west. That’s why he was able to adorn himself with a sentence
«IDEM, NEC UNUM» – DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHERS.
States and religions, democracies and dictatorships, people’s tribunes, scientists without knowledge and “it turns around”, believers and ungodly, artists and dilettantes, temples and cathedrals, history and legend, resisted divisions, united people, not divided… civilizations permeated each other in encounters and collisions, thus creating a multi-ethnic and multicultural world that is a plus and not a minus.
Cities by the sea, ports and ships, merchants and vagabonds, administrations and fortresses, charters and coats of arms, flags and seals, gentlemen and plebs, pirates and sailors, casemates and infirmaries, all this is the heritage of the Mediterranean.
The Mediterranean was and is a world unto itself, but the Mediterranean was and is also the center of the world.
This is the premise of the Festival of the Mediterranean Theater of Purgatoria, established by the Decision of the Council of the JU Center for Culture Tivat, with the task of presenting, within the framework of the cultural theater offer of the Center for Culture from Tivat, to fans and the profession of the theater, in a festival way, a distinctive and special type of theater creation, created from the beginning of the theater to the present day, that is, from ancient tragedy to today’s modern drama, both in theaters that had and still have the geographical location of the Mediterranean, as well as those that nurtured the repertoire and affirmed this type of theater piece.
The Festival of the Mediterranean Theater – Purgatory was founded five years ago with the desire and intention to offer the local audience, and above all the people who are on vacation, the charm and beauty of the Mediterranean theater in the full sense of the word during the summer tourist season. After the first trial and four competition festivals, I can proudly say that the establishment of the Festival was a real cultural move, that we very positively surprised and delighted the theater audience, that the number of registered plays for the festival increases year by year, so this year we had a play from Italy in the official competition for the first time.
