Center for Culture Tivat

The Center for Culture Tivat was founded in 1970.

In all of the Center’s organizational forms, from its founding to the present day, there has been a clear effort to bring together, in the most rational and efficient way possible, the achievements and traditions of cultural development, as well as the spatial, technical, and financial capacities of the community—all within a single institutional framework. In this way, we can also recognize distinct phases in the development of this institution.

It was established to meet the needs and build upon the foundations of the strongly developed mass and ideologically based work of numerous amateur associations in the Tivat municipality, which had already, at that time, inherited a significant previous legacy.

About us

In its current organizational form, the Center for Culture Tivat was formed in 1970, by unifying the activities of the then City Library and Reading Room, the “Radnik” cinema and the Local Amateur Theater. In the 1980s and up to the first half of the 1990s (1983 – 1994), cultural functions were also organized through the INDOK Center Tivat: “Center for Culture, Information and Documentation”, when Radio Tivat and the unit for photo and film documentation (for part of that period, FA “Boka” and klapa “Jadran” were at the Center), so that today this Public Institution unites: the National Library and reading room, the production of theatrical and documentary film productions, the Mediterranean Theater Festival “Purgatorija”, publishing and regular program-repertoire activity that entails; music concerts, literary events, reception and organization of guest programs, promotions and provision of technical services and support to numerous users of the spatial capacities of the Center and the city as a whole.

In all the previous organizational forms of the Center, from its founding to the current moment, it is recognizable the effort to, in the most rational and operational way possible, unite in one institutional place the heritage and traditions of cultural development, spatial, technical and financial possibilities of the community. This is how we also recognize the characteristic stages in the development of this institution.

(in addition to “Bratsva”, in the area of Tivat, after the Second World War, KUD “Sloga” also operated in the area of Krtola, “Josip Marković” in D. Latva, “Naprijed” and “Ilija Marković” in Gornja Lastva, “Budućnost” in Gradiošnica, “Jedinstvo” in Lepetani. )
